Get the 411 on Preventative Steps for your Water Heater

4/6/2022 (Permalink)

Water heater leaks? We got your back. Call SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph, and Washington Counties (618)464-0300

We use our water heaters tirelessly. Whether it comes to cleaning dishes, taking showers, or washing hands, we rely on them to fulfill our hot water needs. If not properly maintained, these devices can not only be unable to heat water, but can break and fill your home with water. However, with the right preventative steps, you can avoid this altogether.

Lifespan

Your average hot water heater has a lifespan of about 10 years. If not replaced in this time, it can start to slow down and not heat water as fast, or shoot water around your home due to leaks and breaks. It is a good idea to have your water heater replaced about every 10 years.

Parts

Hot water heaters aren’t perfect and can often have problems other than being too old. Sometimes, heavily-used parts of the machine, like gaskets, can rust or wear down, causing leaks. Frequently check your water heater for any signs of damage or rust to any parts.

Signs (Not the Movie)

There are a few ways that you can tell if your hot water heater has deteriorating components:

  1. Strange color of hot water
  2. Strange odor of hot water
  3. Leaks
  4. Strange noises coming from the machine

If you stay vigilant when it comes to your hot water heater, you can enjoy years without hot water heater incidents or water damage. We at SERVPRO want homeowners and business owners to know the risks and preventative measures when dealing with hot water heaters so you don’t run into disaster.

If you do have water damage due to a hot water heater malfunction, call your local SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties 24/7 at (618) 464-0300.

Up In Smoke -- Commercial and Residential Fire Restoration

3/23/2022 (Permalink)

No matter what the type of smoke, SERVPRO can help restore you home. Give us a call at 618-464-0300

Did you know that there are different types of smoke that can affect your home or business after a fire? How the fire damage restoration cleanup is executed depends on the types of smoke we find. Here is a list of a few kinds:

  1. Fuel oil soot - Refers to smoke that backflows into a home from a furnace or fireplace.
  2. Wet smoke - Refers to smoke that results from plastics and rubbers that burn at low heat, causing a sticky, smeary substance to form. Can have a pungent odor.
  3. Dry smoke - Your average smoke. Comes from paper and wood burning at high temperature, sending the heat towards the ceiling along with black, billowing clouds.
  4. Protein smoke - Produced by evaporation of material rather than from fire itself. Protein smoke is virtually invisible, yet it discolors paints and varnishes and has an extreme pungent odor.
  5. Others - Smoke from tear gas, fingerprint powder, and fire extinguisher residue.

At SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties, we pride ourselves in learning about any kind of damage that can be done to your home or business. The better we understand the disaster, the better we can help make it “Like it never even happened.” If your home or business needs fire, smoke, or soot damage recovery, call us 24/7 at (618) 464-0300.

  2. Toxic chemicals can be produced from a water or fire disaster. Always wear boots and gloves to protect yourself.
  3. Damage done to structures or furniture can create sharp points or jagged edges. If you do get injured, use care when handling and cleaning any cuts or wounds.
  4. To prevent eye injuries from flying debris, dust, contaminated water, or chemicals, wear safety goggles.
  5. Avoid areas with carbon monoxide from propane, gas fired generators, or other equipment.
  6. When using ladders, always position at a safe angle, avoid any electrical wires overhead, and do not place on unstable surfaces.
  7. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and don’t overreach when using chainsaws or other power tools.
  8. Wear proper filtration masks/equipment when dealing with toxic fumes and mold spores.

At SERVPRO, we take OSHA guidelines seriously in order to keep our technicians (and you) safe. By sharing some of these preventative measures, we hope to make you aware of the standard we are held to so that you may stay safe as well.

Leading Causes of Residential Fires

2/7/2022 (Permalink)

If you experience a house fire, remember to call in the PROS. SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph and Washington Counties 618-464-0300

We at SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties know that the more informed our neighbors are, the safer they are from disasters like home fires. There are many causes of home fires, but some are more prevalent than others. We listed out the top five causes of home fires below:

#1 Cooking

The leading cause of home fires in the United States is cooking. Most often, these fires are caused by unattended stoves or ovens. Grease fires also heavily contribute to this statistic because of their unpredictable nature and unconventional methods to deal with them. If you ever have a grease fire in your home, DO NOT use water. Rather, use a metal lid, ample baking soda, or a fire extinguisher to suffocate it.

#2 Heating Appliances

Devices such as space heaters and furnaces are also susceptible to catching objects around them on fire. Much like with cooking, heating appliances left unattended can cause heavy fire damage. Check on your heating appliances for signs of damage or misuse often to avoid fire in your home.

#3 Electrical Gear

For electrical gear, often it is too many appliances plugged into one outlet, or an overheating/overused appliance that will start the fire damage in a home or business. Make sure your home or business stays safe by checking outlets for black marks or signs of sparking.

#4 Intentional

Unfortunately, arson is the number-four cause of fires in the United States.

#5 Smoking-Related Accidents

Always practice safe smoking habits if you or someone you know smokes in your home or building.

SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties is there for you in any fire damage situation, 24/7. If your home or business suffered fire damage of any kind, call your local experts at (618) 464-0300.

Helpful Hints for Blizzards and Extreme temps!!

1/20/2022 (Permalink)

Don't just hang around until it's too late. Follow these tips and if you experience any storm damage call us 618-464-0300

Our current pandemic we are all experiencing feels much like a mental storm or blizzard. An actual blizzard is a severe snowstorm with winds in excess of 35 mph and visibility of less than 1/4th of a mile for more than 3 hours. Traveling by car or foot is highly discouraged during blizzard conditions. It increases the chance of hypothermia, accident, and death. If you must travel by car during a blizzard, it is vital to have with you an emergency aid kit: water, jumper cables, road flares, tow rope, and non-perishable snacks.

To avoid hypothermia if caught outdoors during a blizzard, stay hydrated and nourished. Keep blood flowing by moving around. If it is safe to do so, build a snow cave to block winds that can reduce your body temperature. Avoid eating snow as well; it can actually make you colder! While keeping yourself safe, also think about the well-being of your animals by creating an emergency plan for your pets.

Before you receive a storm warning, be prepared. The loss of electricity means no hot water and heat, so stock up on non-perishable foods, blankets, flashlights, extra batteries, and candles beforehand.

If your home or business suffers from storm damage, call your local SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties 24/7 at (618) 464-0300. We are here to help.

Benefits of Ozone after Fire Damage to Your Home

1/18/2022 (Permalink)

The Smoke smell can be a nasty reminder after a fire in your home. Call SERVPRO to take care of that for you with our Ozone system at 618-464-0300

Fresh Ozone

Do you remember your fifth-grade science class? Ozone is three oxygen molecules bonded together which makes up the layer that protects the Earth from harmful UV rays. Ozone can also be created when lightning strikes, which helps purify the air. We can harness that purifying power through devices called ozone generators.

What is an Ozone Generator?

Ozone generators produce small lightning reactions that produce ozone (O3) molecules. This actually changes the molecular makeup of the air, purifying it of any smoke molecules that may be present after a fire disaster.

How Does it Work?

When the ozone machine produces O3, those extra oxygen atoms attach themselves to smoke molecules, resulting in a molecule with a non-offensive odor. The addition of an oxygen atom to a molecule is a process called oxidation. With these generators, we are able to clean anywhere that air can flow, which is why it is so effective in the restoration of smoke-damaged homes or businesses.

Is it Safe to Use?

Too much ozone can actually damage certain materials such as textiles, leather, rubber, and certain plastics. However, in the hands of a professional, the ozone can be used competently to remove smoke odors without harming these items. When too much is inhaled, ozone can damage your lungs. When in use, the structure is closed and there should be no entry. Our technicians at SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties are experts in odor removal and are trained in these matters.

If your home or business has a smoke odor that you just cannot get rid of, come to your local SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties. We have your back and can make any disaster “Like it never even happened.”

When life hands you water damage, make sure to call the Pros. SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph and Washington Counties 618-464-0300

Winter is coming, but we have some tips!!

1/13/2022 (Permalink)

Winter is coming and with rigid temps so could frozen pipes. Call SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph, and Washington Counties 618-464-0300

Winter weather can mean more than just slippery roads and snowmen to make. There are large threats of water damage to your home during the winter months. The more you know about them, the better you can prevent these issues.

Frozen Pipes

If not handled properly, pipes in your home can burst due to pressure built from frozen water blockages. The best ways to prevent this are:

  1. Be sure to completely drain water from swimming pool and sprinkler lines, as well as outside hoses.
  2. Open kitchen cabinets to let warm air near the plumbing.
  3. When the weather is extremely cold, let water drip from faucets that may come from exposed pipes.
  4. Keep your heat set to the same temperature both day and night

Ice Dams

Most people have never heard of an ice dam, however, they can be a major problem during winter. Ice dams occur when heated air melts roof snow downward into water dammed by ice stuck to the gutter. When the trapped water cannot safely flow into the gutter system, it can backflow into the house, causing water to enter through the roof and forcing the shingles to shift. Preventing ice dams is as easy as removing ice and snow from your roof and gutters to ensure that water flows where you want it to.

If you have water damage due to burst pipes or ice dams this winter, call SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties at (618) 464-0300

Once the fire is cleared, how do you mange the Smoke and Soot damage?

1/11/2022 (Permalink)

If your home looks like this after a fire, call the Pros at SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph, and Washington Counties.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph, and Washington Counties will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

If your basement looks like a swimming pool, don't stress. Call your local SERVPRO at 618-464-0300

A basement can flood at any time, although flooding most often occurs during heavy rainfall. Basements are inherently prone to flooding because they are the lowest level of a building and are normally built partly or entirely below ground level. There are several reasons why your basement could flood, including:

  • A blocked or failed sewer lateral pipe
  • Heavy rain causes surface water to pool around your home
  • Storm sewer backup
  • Sanitary sewer backup
  • Foundation drainage failure
  • Water supply-line break or hot-water tank failure
  • And many more

If flood water is not handled quickly and properly, it can jeopardize your health and safety, and cause severe damage to your home’s structure. Remember, the longer you wait, the worse the problem will get.

The bottom line: a flooded basement can jeopardize your health, safety, and your home’s integrity. HEPA the filter of Heroes

SERVPRO Air Scrubbers are equipped with HEPA filters for your piece of mind

Mold is tricky to remediate. It grows rapidly and spreads millions of spores as long as it is allowed to sit. The worst part is, some things cannot be recovered from mold. If mold is growing on drywall, the only way to remove it is to cut out the entire section of affected drywall. Quick mold removal is essential when your stuff is on the line. One of the ways SERVPRO helps you recover from any mold disaster is through HEPA filters and vacuums.

HEPA

HEPA filters are heavy-duty filters that can capture particles in the air. When used properly, they are the most efficient way of removing mold spores from your business. HEPA filters are mostly found in our air scrubbers. We close off mold-afflicted rooms and create a negative-pressure environment, forcing all of the air through the HEPA filter-equipped air scrubber. This ensures that those mold spores are captured and destroyed, bringing the mold level back to natural levels.

Use in Fire Disasters

The use of HEPA filters and vacuums doesn’t stop there. They also prove useful in fire situations. Air scrubbers are used to remove smoke odors and HEPA vacuums are used to remove soot webs.

If your business is affected by mold, call your local SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties at (618) 464-0300.
